Week 8 Blog post!

Kia ora e te Whānau!

Firstly, thank you to all of the parents who helped with the Triathlon, we couldn't have done it without you! It was so pleasing to see all Hōpara students getting out there and giving it their best shot! Below I have attached some photos of the day!

In P4C this week we watched a video about Isle de jean Charles - This short documentary profiles residents of the Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana, as they confront a future threatened by sinking shorelines and rising seas (we have attached the video for you to watch at home). Whilst watching the children had to note down as many "themes or concepts" and any initial questions they may have had. From here we will explore one of these questions further.

Here are some of the questions the children came up with....

Is our future determined by environmental change?

Can environmental change cause loss of culture?

How is a home without culture?

Is loss just fear of change?

How does environmental loss affect ecosystems?

Why does time affect people's perspectives?

Can you have belonging without a home? What is a home?

Does what happen on the island affect other parts of the world?

Why has no one helped solve the problem?

Can you have courage when grieving?

When is tradition and perseverance overcome by nature?

How can courage influence social/environmental change?

Can fear strip away belonging/tradition/culture?

Can culture be redefined?

What is P4C? Philosophy for Children (P4C) is an international educational programme aimed at Year 1 - 13 students.  It taps children's natural curiosity and sense of wonder and is dedicated to empowering them to make sense of themselves, and the world around them, through philosophical inquiry.

This week we also begun our PAT testing, we will continue to analyse these results over the next few weeks. Next week Linda will be in Hōpara instead of Ashley as she continues her work for the Kāhui ako.

Ongoing Reminders:
Devices -
If your child has their own BYOD device they can now start to bring it to school. We will support them with getting it functioning on our school wifi. Devices need to come to school fully charged.
